First Solo Mio
Lyrics copyright © 2010 by Prof. H. Paul Shuch
Sung to the tune of "O Sole Mio" (G. Capurro & E. Di Capua, 1898)
Chorus:
First solo mio, I'm here alone
With no instructor to get me home.
If ever I land this plane,
I'll never venture aloft again.Takeoff was easy, only slightly breezy.
But now I'm starting to get quite queasy.
On turning downwind, I have really found wind.
I wonder how I'll ever land this plane.Chorus
Just as I turn base, it's the airspeed I chase.
If I don't land now, how can I save face?
If my CFI sees I can't handle this breeze.
I doubt she'll ever sign me off again.Chorus
Wait just a moment; now the wind has shifted.
I ease the stick back; one wing has lifted.
Kick in right rudder, and she starts to shudder,
Why I can't land I'll never understand.Chorus
Too close to the ground, I commence a go-around.
The chirp of tires is not such a bad sound.
What should I do? I know! Just make this a touch-and-go,
But now I'm there, up in the air once more.Chorus
Next try, I'm able. Airspeed's much more stable.
I see the threshold, and start to get bold.
I wipe my sweaty palm, trying hard to stay calm,
Bounce only twice, and then my flight is done.Chorus
That wasn't so bad. It's the most fun I've had,
And it did not hurt, 'til they cut my shirt.
So glad I tried it, for I'm now a pilot,
And I can't wait to go aloft once more.Final Chorus:
First solo mio, up there alone
Need no instructor to get me home.
I guess I can land a plane,
Now watch me venture aloft again.
