Website Design Philosophy
A website is your portal to the world. Thus, the image it projects will reflect on all aspects of your organization and its personnel, business, and services, long after your initial web hosting contract has expired. We at Microcomm design websites for a global audience. As such, we believe that each page of every site should:
- have a consistent look and feel
- load within 30 seconds using a V.90 dialup connection
- be located in an intuitive subdirectory, with an organized directory tree
- be designed from the ground up with orderly growth in mind
- avoid the use of frames
- use JavaScript, flash, animation and sound very sparingly
- be thoroughly spell-checked
- pass Bobby (disability access) compliance
- pass World Wide Web Consortium validation
- be rated by the Internet Content Rating Association
- render identically on all browsers (Netscape, IE, Opera, Lynx, FireFox, Mozilla, Mosaic, etc.)
- not require the downloading or installation of patches or plug-ins
- be fully navigable in text-only mode
- be fully indexed and searchable
- emphasize content over appearance
- have a navigation bar, or nav links, in the same place as every other page
- take the user directly and easily to any major section of the website
- be accessible from any other page on the site, in no more than three clicks
- use no more than two fonts and three colors
- be readable when browser overrides declared fonts and colors
- be fully meta-tagged, with key words reasonable for search engine access
- be fully commented throughout the script, to enhance maintainability
- bear a copyright statement and last revision date
- provide a logical flow of information
- provide an email link back to the Webmaster, for reporting of errors
- display corporate logo either in upper left-hand corner or at top center
- link logo back to top or 'home' page
- be scripted so text loads first, then graphics
- be updated and re-indexed weekly
- be tested weekly for broken graphics and dead links
- add descriptive text popups to all graphical links
- anticipate that secure servers aren't, and secure web content isn't
- be easy to enter, and even easier to exit
- respect the privacy of the user
- ensure that content trumps glitz, every time
- treat visitors like guests in your home
