Aircraft mechanic and educator Bob Norton, a familiar face on the Piper Memorial Airport, passed away at the Williamsport Home at the age of 90. He was a 1948 graduate of Allegany High School, received a certificate from the Williamsport Technical Institute, and an associate degree from Williamsport Area Community College (now Pennsylvania College of Technology), where he later taught aircraft mechanical systems. A pilot since 1954, Bob flew, worked at, and instructed for a host of agencies, companies, and colleges during his long career, including Cattaraugus County (NY) Sheriff's Department, Allegany (NY) Fire Department, PA Department of Forest and Waters, PA National Guard (which he served for 38 years, retiring as a Command Sergeant Major), Strouse Aeronautical (Indiana, PA), and Dixon A.C.+R. Corp. (Williamsport PA). Bob was a writer and supervisor of service manuals and operators handbooks at Piper Aircraft Corp. in Lock Haven. For 24 years he was an aviation instructor at Williamsport Area Community College and Pennsylvania College of Technology. For over 30 years, he could be seen every June at the Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven fly-in at Piper Memorial Airport in Lock Haven, volunteering his mechanical talents to assist fly-in visitors with a host of mechanical issues. Bob Norton enjoyed working on everything mechanical: aircraft, trains (including model trains), and automobiles.
