Note that all required paperwork from the applicant, the recommending instructor, and the examiner must be completed and submitted to the FAA Designee Management System for approval, not less than 24 hours in advance, before the practical test can commence.
Plan on spending a full day for your checkride. In the morning, you can expect about an hour of paperwork and a thorough prebrief. Next, you should plan on about two hours for a thorough oral examination. After a one-hour lunch break, we will allow for about two hours of flight testing in the afternoon, followed by roughly an hour for more paperwork and a thorough debriefing.
To schedule your practical test, first make application via the FAA IACRA website, and have your flight instructor log in and sign your application as "recommending instructor." Then, call your selected examiner (you can reach Prof. Shuch by cellphone to +1 570 419-1229 -- evenings between 8 and 10 PM are usually best) with your preferred test date, as well as an alternate.
It will be helpful for you to have this Applicant Checklist filled out and in front of you when you call. You will need to provide your IACRA Federal Tracking Number (FTN) to the examiner, and will be assigned a cross-country trip to plan. (For planning purposes, Prof. Shuch's weight is 170 pounds, and he carries with him a 10 pound flight bag.) This planned trip will be discussed during the oral part of your examination, and flown (at least in part) during the flight test phase.

Just a reminder that the use of cellphones, cameras, and audio recording devices is not permitted during the oral, flight, and debriefing portions of the examination, although pictures may be taken after all the formalities are concluded. Nobody but you, the DPE, and an FAA Inspector (if required) will be permitted to attend or observe the oral or flight test portions. However, your instructor is allowed (nay, encouraged) to be present for the pre-test briefing, as well as the post-test debrief.
